Video: Egg Donor Selection and Communication
Posted by: Editor on Apr 19, 2011 in News

Lisa: Hi, my name is Lisa Stack and I’m the CNY Fertility Support Coordinator.  Today, I’m sitting here with Kari, one of our Donor Coordinators, and she’s going to tell us a little bit about the donor selection process, and the testing that they go through.  So, here’s Kari, if you could let us know.

Kari: My name is Kari Gardner.  I work with recruiting egg donors.  Generally, what will happen is the girls will call me, interested in being an egg donor.   They complete an application with FDA questionnaire on there.   Basically, any type of family medical history, their education history is in there.  Based on that is how they’re selected.  We will not recruit any donors that maybe have a genetic history of breast cancer, uterine cancer, or something that may be genetically passed.  Once that happens and they are approved for the program, then they will come in for an interview at the office.  At that point, once they’ve signed consents, they are in the donor pool for the recipients to look at, and they are tested for all infectious diseases by FDA requirements once they are chosen by a recipient.

Lisa: Thank you.  When you select the donor, and you begin the process,  what’s the communication like?  How do they know when the donor’s ready or how do they start their meds?

Kari: Generally, when I meet with the recipients we can go over their history of their periods, and what their past fertility history has been like.  We’ll go over what type of donors they’re looking for, what is important to them while picking a donor, and I’ll help them kind of feel their way through the donor portal as to who would be a good match for them; but generally, they choose the donor they like is.  I’m always in touch with you through email.  I give you my cell phone number if you need anything after hours, so you are always able to get a hold of me.  I will follow you step by step through everything including what medications you need to take, the medications the donor will be on, when everything needs to be started as far as medications, any testing that you need to complete prior to using a donor; but you’ll never be left in the dark, I always follow you step by step through the whole process.

Lisa: OK, thank you so much.  I know this is good for the donors and for the recipients as well.  If you have any questions for Kari, you can email her.  I’ll have her email address at the bottom of this video.  If you have any questions for the center, please feel free to contact us.  We’re always available to answer your questions and to walk you through the process.
