Honoring Loss in the Spring

by

statue
This article originally appeared October 2011.  We hope that with warmer weather arriving, revisiting this article will help stir a few ideas for honoring any miscarriages that occurred over the winter.
Tiny statues greet visitors to many Buddhist temples around Japan.  It is common to see small hats adorning the little ones, or even toys scattered at their feet.  You may even witness a woman holding a solemn vigil.  These statues are public memorials for children who pass away before their parents, especially those lost during pregnancy.  Once a miscarriage or pregnancy loss has occurred the grieving family will place a hat, scarf, or memorial item on the Jizo statue in honor of the lost life.  This is a beautiful public display of pregnancy loss. The gift to Jizo honors both the life that lasted for only a brief time, and the grief that remains.  This is a moment where it is OK to publicly grieve a life that was invisible to the outside world.
Unfortunately, we really don’t have a practice here in our culture that openly welcomes the grief of a family after pregnancy loss.  Although there may not be a public venue for your sadness, it is important to create your own memorial.  There are many ways to honor the life that you nurtured for only a brief time, and I hope that you are able to find a way that fits your family best.  Here are a few suggestions, that have brought many grieving families great comfort:
1.  Ask a member of your religious community to hold a funeral mass or memorial service.
2.  Designate a place in your home for a memorial piece.  Some like to find a piece of artwork that calls to them, or create one of your own.
3.  Name the child, so that you can refer to him/her easily in your conversation.  This also acknowledges the personhood that you had attached to that brief and precious life.
4.  Have a memorial piece of jewelery made that you can wear.
5.  Plant a tree or beautiful flowers in honor of the life that you lost.

We would like to invite you to connect with our great community of support.  Our Circle of Hope Support Group sessions, closed Facebook Support Groups, and virtual support sessions are all opportunities for you to share your story and hear from others who have had similar experiences.   Together, we can process the losses we have faced, and take that first step to healing.
For all of our fertility support offerings, please check our CNY Fertility and CNY Healing Arts calendars.  Please let us know if you have any questions, and we look forward to hearing from you during these sessions!
One last note, did you know that we started  new Private Facebook Fertility and Pregnancy Groups for current clients?  Here, you can find a safe and secure space to share with other women and men facing similar challenges.  You can get immediate support and feedback!  If you are interested in joining, please message Lisa Stack within the Patient Portal.

Asking for and Accepting Help from Loved Ones

by

support2The challenge of infertility is not momentary.  Unfortunately, for many women, infertility is a daily struggle that they must endure for years.  The steady and constant burden that many women feel with infertility can make asking for and accepting help from loved ones seem fruitless.  Will one cup of tea with your sister really help?  Will one movie night with your best friends after a miscarriage actually make you feel better?
Grief doesn’t have to mean isolation.  Grief, from infertility, should be viewed just as any other struggle.  Grief also cannot be placed on a sliding scale.  It isn’t fair to say “Well, she isn’t sick, but she did have a miscarriage.”  This minimizes the emotional burden that someone may be carrying.   Infertility is just as valid a struggle as any other medical condition, and we do not need to isolate ourselves, or carry our burdens silently.  Yes, you are strong and resilient.  However, if you have been steadily enduring infertility for 1,095 days (3 years), or any length of time, it is OK to hand one of those days over to those who love you.
If you choose to let your closest loved ones in on your journey with you, you may find that allowing your sister (husband, mom, friend, etc.) to share the burden with you for even just one day will help make the rest of the 1,095 feel more manageable and less lonely.  That one movie or one cup of tea suddenly moves from feeling fruitless to becoming a trail marker.  That one moment helped you to break up the journey into segments, and now you have enough support and love reserved to help carry you to the next trail maker.
This Thursday at 7p Lisa will discuss this topic in greater depth during the Asking For and Accepting Help from Your Loved Ones webinar.  We hope that you join her, and begin to shed the mindset of isolation on your journey.

Returning to Your Normal Routine After the Holidays

by

winter-sunrise-in-alaskaAs we reach the end of January, we are focusing on getting back on track and returning to our normal routines.  The holidays, while a wonderful time to celebrate and enjoy friends and family, often throw us out of our regular day-to-day schedules.  We spend more time shopping, preparing for holiday gatherings, and catching up with those we love.  In turn, there is less time for a steady diet, exercise, and meditation practice.  Whether you were cycling through the holidays, or you took the past month off, now is the time to take a step back and return to the basics of wellness.
Transitioning back into your normal routine can be challenging, but if you are able to slowly reintroduce the components of wellness that felt most beneficial to you, you will likely find peace and serenity in returning to the familiar.  As you return to your regular diet choices, set aside time for yoga or other peaceful movement, and make the effort to quiet your mind, you will find comfort in your well known pace.  With this comfort and peace, will come renewed hope for your journey to fertility.  Gathering yourself together for a fresh start after a holiday break will take time, but the transition will open your heart to new possibilities for your fertility.
To help you ease back into increased health and wellness, it is helpful to look back and recognize the foods and practices that helped you feel your best.  First, try to think back to a time when you felt rested, light, energized and calm.  What were you doing to support your wellness?  Were you getting extra rest, attending yoga regularly, or limiting carbohydrates and sugars?  If so, those are perfect places to start and reintroduce those practices to your daily routine.
You will find many helpful support, exercise, and meditation sessions on our CNY Fertility and CNY Heling Arts calendars.
As you ease back into the support we have available to you, know that we are happy to have you back.  We are available for anything that you need, on your journey to your most fertile self.
Finally, did you know that we started  new Private Facebook Fertility and Pregnancy Groups for current clients?  Here, you can find a safe and secure space to share with other women and men facing similar challenges.  You can get immediate support and feedback!  If you are interested in joining, please email Lisa Stack:  Lstack@cnyfertility.com

The New Year: Evolving Into a New You

by

wintercardinalGood morning!  I hope that you had a wonderful weekend.  This week marks the beginning of a new year, and a new you.  This is the time of year when hasty resolutions are made in hopes of changing something we aren’t happy with.  Instead of feeling like something is wrong and must be changed, I’d like you to use the word evolution this year.  Tonight, promise yourself that you will evolve.  You will grow, adapt, and move fluidly.  You will work with your body and your environment, instead of against them.  You will not fight against who you are, but instead, work to adapt and evolve.
This process of personal evolution will not happen overnight.  This is a slow and steady journey, to life long adaptations.  Instead of simply saying ‘I am not going to be stressed in the new year’ and naturally breaking that promise, you will incorporate deep breathing into your day naturally decreasing your stress level and creating life long coping tools.
We have many opportunities to support you on your evolution, and most of them are free!  Circle of Hope support group sessions, Free Yoga for Fertility, Fertile Friends Gathering, and acupuncture with your IUI and ET are all ways to naturally evolve and adapt.  They’re slow, healthy, and designed just for you.
To help you with your Mindful Meditation practice, we have a library of meditations available for you, here.  We also have meditation webinars, workshops, and yoga sessions available.  You can find the next session close to you, on our CNY Fertility and CNY Healing Arts calendars.
Finally, did you know that we started  new Private Facebook Fertility and Pregnancy Groups for current clients?  Here, you can find a safe and secure space to share with other women and men facing similar challenges.  You can get immediate support and feedback!  If you are interested in joining, please message Lisa Stack within the Patient Portal

Holiday Support: Mindful Meditation

by

candleAs we are right in the middle of our winter holidays, this is a perfect week to focus on mindful meditation.  This week, let us focus on leaving all of the judgement, negativity, sadness, and anxiety behind us.
The mind is an integral component of your fertility.  Keeping a mindful and open outlook will invite creative thinking, and the clarity to process challenging emotions.  If you are open and present, you may find yourself interested in trying new ways to improve your fertility.  For example, you may have the energy and confience to try Yoga for Fertility, or you may have the willingness to share in a support group or counseling setting.
If your mind is preoccupied with negative repetitive thoughts, which can be expected while coping with infertility, it may be challenging to open yourself to new treatments and fertility supporting practices.  Dr. Kiltz strongly believes in the importance of Mindful Meditation, and its many benefits to all who pratice.  One of the greatest benefits of meditation is the skill of coping with challenging emotoins.  With practice, you will find that you are able to acknowledge the emotion, give it the space to be present for a few moments, and then successfully redirect that emotion into someting more productive for your fertility.
For a very simple meditation practice, close your eyes and place your hands on your abdomen.  Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, and notice your hands rise as your belly expands.  Exhaling through your mouth, slowly whisper the word “out” to yourself.  With each exhale, push all of the negativity, challenges, and concerns out of your being.  Repeat this breathing cycle for as long as you would like, starting slowly with just a few breaths.
