Secondary Infertility
Posted by: Editor on Mar 30, 2010 in News

Many people think that infertility is only a concern when trying to conceive your first child. Secondary infertility, the inability to have a child after a previous birth, actually has a higher prevalence. Most couples fail to seek treatment for their secondary infertility. Often experiencing some downplay from their physicians if and when they do bring it up. Many are told to “keep trying”.

At CNY Fertility Center, with offices in Latham/Albany, Syracuse and Rochester, we are knowledgeable and competent and are here to help you grow your family. We will offer the treatment and support you are looking for, through the use of eastern and western medicine, positive thinking and healing arts. For many couples with secondary infertility there is a lack of support, mainly because so few recognize this as a true problem. Comments like, “you should be happy with what you have” are frequently spoken. Emotionally these comments can be devastating and feelings of anger, guilt and depression may take over the couple’s livelihood. You may have guilt about not having a sibling for your existing child. You may be angry about not have the large family you dreamt about. There may be anger towards your spouse, although not intentional, this can cause marital problems.

At CNY Fertility Centers we want to help. If you are seeking treatment to build your family, we will assist you in every way that we can. You will meet with one of our physicians to review you past history. Some testing with blood work and ultrasound will be performed and a treatment plan will be established. We will monitor you throughout your individualized treatment plan to increase your chance of success. We will offer emotional support through our support groups and one on one conversation. We will encourage the use of CNY Healing Arts for massage, acupuncture and yoga. We want you to be successful in your journey to grow your family. For more information contact us 518-690-0700. I have to agree – Secondary Infertility isn’t always given the respect and attention it deserves. After living the gamet of infertility experiences including 1 miscarriage, failed IUI’s, 1 IUI healthy baby, 1 ectopic, failed IVF, and now being pregnant with FET twins – I appreciate each and every individual experience that a woman can go through. It’s hard and it hurts in every way that it can. The empty promises such as, “your body will kick into gear after you deliver your first…” and “you did it once, it will happen in the right time.” Well, the time is NOW!
For my first I did everything by the book, I joined Circle of Hope wide-eyed and cried until it felt better. I let go of the poisonous relationships and started believing in both eastern & western medicine. Poof! Pregnant! My son is now 20 months old…
This time was different. My life committments and my prejudices against people without experience have prevented me from attending Circle of Hope at CNY and having confidence in my treatment. I want Dr. K – I like the new Docs but really – Dr. K is MY doctor and he helped me have my son – he’s who I wanted this time around. Also, I don’t want to talk to a woman at Circle of Hope who hasn’t had her tube/womanhood cut off and who hasn’t lost a pregnancy. If you don’t know the feeling of weekly internal sono’s for months, don’t tell me you understand because you don’t. If “take your pants off and sit on the table” don’t sound familiar to you – or you haven’t given yourself countless injections – you are fortunate but shouldn’t be counseling me. No no NO!
Thank-goodness for my friends who I met the first time around at CNY, we have huddled and formed our own circle – and there’s a ton of hope and love there. I’ve advocated for myself, stood strong when telling my team of doctors and nurses what my body needs, and I’ve followed recommendations by the book again such as accupuncture, meds, and meditation.
I’m grateful for CNY. I’m grateful that Secondary Infertility is getting some attention. I hope the Circle of Hope Secondary Inferility Group transforms into something run by one of us, who has traveled this road and knows first hand the bumps, bruises, hurts, and absolute love and beauty at the end.
    Sunny Days Ahead!

    Hello,

When I was dealing with primary infertility (3 years worth–m/c, IUIs, 2 IVFs and finally our beautiful son) it was much easier to focus on myself and to be positive about treatment and get the rest that you need during IVF.
When he turned 6 months old we went back to trying again…IUIs, 2 FETs and finally this current IVF. It has been such a different experience having a second time around at this…I feel so much of what is said in this article. I feel horribly guilty when I wonder if my almost 2 year-old will ever have a sibling, I feel like family and friends might think I am just pushing the envelope as if I already got one baby…why do I need another?
It is not an easy journey! Thanks for the article.
