Fertility Tips for the Holiday Season: Nourishing Foods

by

Fresh assorted vegetables in boxes on farmer's marketGood morning!  This week, as many gather to celebrate the holidays, it is a great time to remember the importance of nourishing foods to feed both your body and spirit.  As you are celebrating over the next two weeks, keep in mind the importance of balance.  While there isn’t one perfect diet for fertility, there is a balance between allowing yourself to enjoy the special holiday meals, and providing your body with the most healthy and nourishing foods possible.  With the awareness of a few simple tips, you can enjoy your holiday meals while nurturing your fertility.
Nutrition for your fertility can be broken down into a few easy to remember guidelines, derived from Dr. Kiltz’s Fertile Secret:

  • Clean:  Try to reach for the most pure items with the fewest ingredients.  Minimize processed foods, to maximize the nutrients available to your body.
  • Fresh:  Include something fresh in every meal.  While enjoying your holiday meals, add an extra side of fruits or vegetables.
  • Clear:  Make sure that you are drinking plenty of water!

We want you to enjoy the holidays, while also feeling in control of your journey to your most fetile self.  If you are going to indulge this holiday, remembering to balance with one of the guidelines above will help you to stay on course.

Meditation for Fertility: Out of My Hands

by

CNY Fertility Center's Fertility MeditationsEvery month, CNY Fertility Center holds an Evening Meditation & Relaxation Webinar for you to enjoy from the comfort of your own home and the recording of our March 2013 session is below.
Out of My Hands:
Holding yourself responsible for everything that happens with your fertility adds an incredible amount of unfair pressure.  When it comes to your fertility, there is actually very little that you have control over.  Recognizing that most of your journey is out of your hands can free you to focus your energy on what you can improve, diet, exercise, and more peaceful thoughts.  This mantra and meditation focuses on recognizing what is out of your hands, and offers a peaceful practice of releasing unnecessary pressure.  Pregnancy loss, egg quality, age, financial/insurance restrictions, and sperm count/quality are all factors that you have very little control over, and this meditation will help you to release yourself from this burden.
Get comfortable, sit back or lay down, relax and press the arrow to begin listening.
March 2013
If you would like to explore more meditation opportunities, visit this link and you will find many recordings to enjoy from previous months. Additionally, our February Meditation Webinar will be taking place on Thursday, May 23rd at 7pm. Visit this link to register to join Lisa Stack, Support Coordinator, for her monthly Evening Meditation and Relaxation webinar.

Affordable Oocyte Cryopreservation (Egg Freezing) at CNY Fertility Center in New York State

by

State of the Art Lab CrewOocyte Cryopreservation or egg freezing involves extracting a woman’s eggs, freezing the eggs, and storing them for future use.  When a woman is ready to become pregnant, the eggs can be thawed, fertilized, and transferred to her uterus.
Women choose egg freezing for different reasons.  A woman diagnosed with cancer, who has not yet begun chemotherapy, now has the option of preserving her fertility by cryopreserving her eggs for future use.  For many years this option has been available and successful for men, by freezing their sperm prior to chemotherapy.
A growing trend is women freezing their eggs for future use when they choose to delay pregnancy to pursue a career or any other reason that involves postponing childbearing.  Many women are simply unaware of the impact of age on the number and quality of eggs they will produce. Fertility peaks in most women in their 20’s.  Around age 35 fertility starts to decline at a more rapid pace. At age 40, your chance of getting pregnant in any given month is less then 5%.  If a woman is over 35 years young and has been trying to conceive for 6 months without achieving a pregnancy, she should seek the care of a fertility specialist.  As women become more aware of their biological clocks and the impact on their ability to have a child using their own eggs, egg freezing is being more widely considered.
Egg freezing involves a woman taking daily hormone injections for approximately 10-12 days.  During this time, blood work and ultrasounds are performed to monitor the client’s response to the hormones.  Once the follicles (the sacs that the egg grows in) are of mature size, a hormone injection is given and two days later the eggs will be retrieved by the physician under conscious sedation.  The same day the eggs are collected they will be frozen.
When ready for a pregnancy, the woman’s uterine lining will be prepared with oral estrogen, and once adequate, the frozen eggs will be thawed and fertilized with her partner’s sperm or donor sperm.  The now fertilized eggs will be watched for 3-5 days for embryo development and then transferred to the uterus.  Approximately 11 days following the embryo transfer a blood pregnancy test will be drawn to determine if a pregnancy has been established.
The cost of an egg freezing cycle at CNY Fertility Center is $2500.00.  This includes the oocyte retrieval, anesthesia, freezing of the eggs and the first year of storage.  This does not include medications or monitoring.
It would be our pleasure to assist you in planning your family.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact a member of our team at any one of our three locations in Albany, Syracuse, and Rochester, New York. You can also call us toll-free at 800.539.9870.

Video: Finding Strength and Support After an Unsuccessful IVF

by

Hi.  My name is Lisa Stack, and I’m the CNY Fertility Support Coordinator.  In my Words of Support and Encouragement article this week, I mentioned that I’ve been getting a lot of support requests from clients who have been returning after a first, second, or third IVF cycle that wasn’t successful.  I know that this can be incredibly disappointing.  Even if you’re just doing IUI cycles or Clomid cycles, you get your hopes built up, a lot of confidence into the cycle, there’s a lot of hope if you’re trying something new-maybe stepping up to a greater level of technology or intensive care.  I know that it can be very disappointing if the cycle is negative.
However, I would like to remind you that we do learn a great deal about you with each cycle, especially with IVF.  If you’ve gone through your first cycle, your second cycle, and you still have not conceived yet, we’re still learning because you are unique.  Although we have many great medication protocols and treatments that we can do for many clients, not one protocol fits everybody.  We have to play a little bit and try things out, seeing if things work, seeing how you respond and really kind of assessing where we came from and where we’re going.  I know it can be frustrating, but please just be patient.  We are taking our time because we want to make sure that we do things correctly, and that we do treat you in the best way possible.
It may take a little bit of time to get the correct medication protocol for you, but every time we do a cycle, every time we do an ultrasound or blood work, it’s not just tedious work.  We are learning something from you and we’re learning how your body reacts and responds to various medications.  We learn how you react from month to month.  These are all really important details that we need to create a great picture of who you are, who you are as a family, and how we can best help you to conceive.  I know that it can be disappointing, but hang in there.  Just know that every time we do a cycle or every time we draw your blood or do an ultrasound, we’re learning and we’re getting a greater picture of who you are and how best to support your fertility.
If you’d like a little bit of extra support this month, we’ve had some great support groups, and we have some great webinars left as well; especially Dr. Kiltz’s webinar this month with Kristen Magnacca and the Interactive Fertility Support Webinar at the end of the month.  Next month, we’ll be having our great support groups as well.  So there’s tons of resources out there for you.   Go look at our calendars on www.cnyfertility.com and www.cnyhealingarts.com and you’ll be able to get a better idea of where you fit into our support schedule and what may help you.  again, hang in there and we will get the process right, but sometimes it takes a little bit of time.
