Have you ever held yourself back out of fear, the fear of failing, or disappointing others? Often, we will avoid challenging situations and potentially anxiety causing decisions to protect ourselves from that feeling of risk that comes with the unknown.
Although this is normal and we all do it, have you ever considered what you could be missing? The fear of disappointment can be paralyzing at times, but sometimes we have to assess what we could possibly lose, and weigh the possibilities.
This month we are reading The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho for our Circle of Hope Support Group. The author addresses this fear of trying in the following,
“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.”
Coelho pushes us to rethink fear and disappointment, and challenge ourselves to realize that the most frightening element of risk is the fear of something going wrong. What if we approached each situation with this attitude? Remind yourself that the worst that can happen is that we lose, and losing isn’t always devastating.
Today, try not to hold yourself back because you are more afraid of suffering than actual process of suffering. You may just succeed and experience a whole new world of opportunities.
