Good morning! I hope that you had a great weekend. I’ve recently had a few requests from clients for tips on how to stay hopeful after trying to conceive for so long. Over time, my response to this has evolved into a two-part process. I’ve learned that I can give you a clear path for a tangible and active hope. The second part, the deeper hope that will help you endure this sometimes long journey, is something that you have to find for yourself.
The first task that I always recommend is to change something about your next cycle. Make this one different. This small change could be adding in acupuncture or a few free yoga for fertility sessions. Whatever you choose, make it something manageable and different than anything you have done in previous cycles. This small change will give you some renewed hope that you are taking a little bit of control back into you hands, and changing the course of your cycle.
This task is a great way to achieve a tangible and active increase in hope. You are making the change. You can write it down on your calendar, and when things get challenging you can remind yourself that you have changed this cycle. This is a great quick hope refresher, and I think it is perfect for those times when you are coming back from a pregnancy loss or you feel like you just need a shift in what you are doing.
The second deeper and long-lasting hope comes from a place that only you can find. This is the hope that you feel after a really great date with your partner, lunch with your mom, Sunday morning in church, or long slow walk with your dog. It is that deep exhale followed by a quiet warmth that you need to be able to find and access. That task that you complete and always say ‘I really need to do that more often’. That is your long-lasting source of hope for the marathon that is a fertility journey. Making little changes and tweaks to your cycle here and there are good for a quick burst of hope, but the deep endurance hope that you need will come from the place where you are happiest.
This year, evolve to place yourself in that happy and peaceful moment more often. Schedule more lunches with your grandmother, get on the floor and play with your dog, go on a meditative or religious retreat. Whatever gives you that ‘I have to do this more often’ feeling.
