Video: Skincare Products and Infertility

Hi!  My name is Lisa Stack and I’m the CNY Fertility Support Coordinator.  This week I uploaded an article, and I highlighted the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetic database.  This really is a great resource if you’re interested in taking your natural living and your natural well-being and wellness to another level.  The National Environmental Working Group has gone through many products out in the stores available for you for skin care products.: everything from lip gloss to shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen; really, anything that you would put on your body.  They’ve tested it for various harmful chemicals or potentially harmful chemicals.  You hear a lot about phthalates, BPA, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and a lot of chemicals that may play a role in your fertility, that may even be linked to cancer later on.  There’s so much research going on and there’s so many different with conflicting stories about these chemicals; but it is important that you be aware of them.  They may impact your cycle; they may impact your overall health and well-being.  So the Environmental Working Group has gone through and labeled many products as safe, kind of not really safe, and unsafe.  So what you can do is go on their website, just plug in any product that you use, and they’ll give you a breakdown of all the chemicals within that product, and any potential challenges that they may pose for your health and your overall well-being.
Now, this is something that is very interesting to do and can be very helpful; but like everything else, you don’t want to get too worked up about it or too engulfed in it.  If it causes you too much anxiety, don’t worry about it.  If it’s something that you’re more interested in; living a more natural and lifestyle and just simplifying the products you use on and in your body, this is a great resource to use.  If you have any questions about certain products or any questions about the products you’re ingesting or using on your body, you can always ask our nurses.  You may have noticed that various times through your cycle and maybe even your egg retrieval, we ask you to use minimal soaps and minimal fragrances such as perfumes.  That’s just because we want to give your body a nice, peaceful welcoming, and allow those eggs and embryos to have good, healthy environments to come into and to work with.  It’s always important to be aware of what you’re putting on your body and how it may impact your life, your health, your well-being, and your fertility.  This Environmental Working Group is a great resource.
If you have any questions, please let me know.  I hope you go on and just take a look at some of the products that you’re using, and how they compare.  Maybe, look at some more natural and healthy alternatives.  Have a great week!
