Smoking Cessation for Fertility

by

woman by windowSmoking, while very challenging to quit, is believed to negatively impact your fertility.  The negative health and fertility affects can be found in both female and male clients.  Many of our clients are working on smoking cessation, and over the next month, we will be providing you with supportive articles, videos, webinars, and resources to help you on your journey to breaking the habit.
We also recommend that you speak with your primary care physician about medication support for quitting.  To help you make this transition, we want to make sure you have many resources to turn to and a wealth of coping tools for when urges arise.
For all of our fertility support offerings, please check our CNY Fertility and CNY Healing Arts calendars.  Please let us know if you have any questions, and we look forward to hearing from you during these sessions!
One last note, did you know that we started  new Private Facebook Fertility and Pregnancy Groups for current clients?  We also have groups for Secondary Infertility and Pregnancy Loss. Here, you can find a safe and secure space to share with other women and men facing similar challenges.  You can get immediate support and feedback!  If you are interested in joining, please message Lisa Stack within the Patient Portal.

PCOS Awareness Month: September 2014

by

heartbellyIn observance of September being PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) Awareness Month, we’ve gathered some great resources for our clients adapting a PCOS lifestyle.  With PCOS affecting an estimated 5-10% of the female population, it becoming more readily diagnosed and treated at younger ages.  This hormone disorder, often requiring treatment for those trying to conceive, also necessitates general lifestyle changes to improve health and symptoms.
Dr. Kiltz talks about PCOS in this video.
In regards to fertility treatment, women with PCOS tend to have two main challenges.  First, women with PCOS tend to not ovulate on their own.  Second, women with PCOS are more prone to having a Luteal Phase Defect, meaning they do not produce enough Progesterone on their own.  Luckily, we have many different medication protocols to help compensate for these two fertility challenges, and other challenges that might present themselves along the way.
To best support your fertility and overall health with PCOS, a diet low in carbohydrates and sugars has shown to be beneficial in counteracting the side effects of insulin resistance in many women with PCOS.  This means that by limiting your carbohydrate and sugar intake, while maintaining a balanced diet, you will likely find relief from many of the challenging symptoms of PCOS such as; difficulty losing weight, fatigue, acne, and high blood sugar.
A diagnosis of PCOS can be overwhelming, especially when considering that this is a condition that will require awareness and care after your days of trying to conceive.  However, once you have educated yourself on the condition, and surrounded yourself with a supportive community of healthcare providers and peers, we’re confident that you will find the lifestyle changes will help you feel healthier, more energized, and more confident.
For your fertility treatment needs, we recommend that you stay in close contact with our clinical staff.  They will guide you on this journey by making medication and treatment recommendations to optimize your fertility and minimize PCOS symptoms.
Diet and Nutrition
We recommend that you speak with our acupuncturists for diet and nutrition recommendations.  They will be able to work with you and suggest specific foods to avoid or incorporate to optimize your fertility.  They can also make supplement recommendations. You can reach our acupuncturists at CNY Healing Arts.  We also posted a great article a few years ago with great dietary recommendations for those coping with PCOS.
Fitness
Exercise and gentle movement have numerous benefits for both PCOS and health in general.  We are happy to offer Free Yoga for Fertility at all of our locations to encourage you to explore this fantastic way to get blood flowing and your muscles moving and stretching.  Be sure to check our CNY Healing Arts Calendars for our full yoga schedule.
Peer Support
Our Private Facebook Support Group has many members who are coping with PCOS.  Many of our Circle of Hope Support Group participants have PCOS, and we also have a PCOS specific support group at our Albany location.  For our monthly support group schedules, please visit our CNY Fertility Calendars.  If you are interested in joining our Facebook Support Group, please message Lisa Stack within the Patient Portal.

Complete Vitamin Support for Male Fertility Support

by

Nutritional Supplements for Enhancing Fertility - CNY Fertility and TheralogixWe know that women should start taking a high quality prenatal vitamin before they try to conceive, but what about men?  As researchers continue to assess the impact of vitamin supplements  and antioxidants on male fertility, they are finding that men would benefit from a complete multivitamin tailored to male fertility.
From increased sperm count, motility, and morphology to improved pregnancy rates, research is pointing to the importance of a good supplement to support any deficiencies the body may have.  Specifically, adequate levels of Vitamins C, D, and E, Zinc, Folic Acid, Selenium, Lycopene, and L-Carnitine are important for optimal male fertility.
In the past, we have recommended certain doses of various vitamins and supplements to both our  male and female clients.  However, we are now able to confidently recommend one particular company, Theralogix, for providing complete vitamin supplements.
Please contact our practitioners for recommendations on the best vitamin formula for you, as well as a referral sheet to receive a discount on your order.  For more information on the supplements we recommend to our clients and ordering information, please visit our informational page.

Natural IVF: Working with the Body's Natural Process

by

yellow flower closeupAre you concerned about the risk of multiples?  The burden of medication on your body, or the additional costs of medications?  Natural IVF might be a great solution for you.
During a Natural IVF cycle, a woman’s body is monitored closely with ultrasounds and bloodwork.  Instead of stimulating the ovaries to produce many follicles, a natural cycle does not use any medications, and instead uses the body’s natural follicular development.  Over the course of your natural cycle we observe your normal follicular growth (typically one follicle), and when your follicle has reached the appropriate size, we proceed with a typical IVF procedure.  The one follicle will be removed during an egg retrieval, and then fertilized.  After fertilization we watch your embryo grow, checking on its progress every few days.  Once your embryo reaches an appropriate stage, we will transfer the embryo back into your uterus.  Then, approximately two weeks later, we will schedule a blood test to check for pregnancy.
Clients will often choose a Natural IVF cycle if they want to minimize the risk of multiples, ovarian hyperstimulation (OHSS), or the number of embryos that could be created with a typical IVF cycle.  Additionally, minimizing the amount of medications used decreases the burden on the body, and the financial strain that clients can incur.
Since you will not be stimulating the ovaries with a Natural IVF cycle, it is unlikely that you will have two or more embryos to work with.  It is also very unlikely that you will have embryos to freeze.  Therefore, it is important to make sure that you are comfortable with a single embryo transfer, without frozen embryos to possibly transfer in the future.
If you would like to learn more about Natural IVF, please feel free to contact our center at any time.   If you are a new patient and would like an initial fertility consultation, in-office or over the phone, please visit this link and fill out our New Appointment Form or call us toll free at 800-539-9870.

Revisiting Male Factor Infertility Support

by

gift-card_tree-fieldYesterday, many of our clients celebrated their first Father’s Day.  We are so proud to have contributed to their journey to parenthood, but we also know that our work is not done.  Many men are still hoping to celebrate their first Father’s Day, and we are committed to doing everything we can to help that dream come true next year.
Male Factor Infertility is challenging emotionally, and physically, to overcome.  Luckily, our treatment options are constantly evolving, and our practice has taken some exciting steps forward this year in advancing our medication protocols and surgical procedures to make fatherhood a possibility for many more men.
For more information on our many treatment options available, including IVF after vasectomy, please contact our office for a consultation or follow up talk, and we would be happy to review your options.
Tonight, Lisa is hosting a free Fertility Support Teleworkshop focusing on Male Factor Infertility, beginning at 6p.  For call information, please email Lisa directly:  Lstack@cnyfertility.com
