The Gift of Life

Embryo Donation

If you’re like many people who have completed their family after a successful IVF treatment and have embryos they don’t intend to use, it’s likely you’re not quite sure what to do with your remaining frozen embryos.  Embryo donation, or gifting your remaining embryos to a CNY Family in need may be the solution for you. Although there are many alternatives, we at CNY believe nothing is more powerful than embryo donation.

    Why Donate Your Embryos

It’s rarely a family’s original plan to utilize donor embryos, but when necessary, it is a beautiful solution that allows a mother to form an intimate bond with her developing child throughout pregnancy.  By donating your embryos, you are helping a family in need by giving the gift of life.

Embryo donation is typically done to help a family who has exhausted all other means of creating a family using their own gametes and donor egg and sperm. At this point in their journey they are likely turning to adoption, but would also like to carry the child and establish a special bond over the nine-month gestational period.

Known Vs. Anonymous Donation

Types of Embryo Donation

At CNY, we understand that people have their own reasons for and hesitations against donation. Some individuals would like to get to know the individual or couple they are donating to, potentially even forming friendships that their children may share. Others, however, would like to remain anonymous, giving the gift of life to a “stranger,” with no personal information exchanged between parties.

That’s why at CNY we have two separate programs so people can donate in the way that best suits their personal wishes.

  • Anonymous

Facilitated by our donor team, our anonymous donor embryo program allows for an anonymous donation that keeps the identity of the donors secret while still screening the donors for genetic disorders and collecting information to help recipients select the appropriate embryo(s).

  • Known

For those looking to form a relationship with their recipients and potentially know the child born from their embryos, we host a private Facebook group to facilitate relationships between potential donors and recipients.

The Process

  • Contact the Embryology Department

To start things off you will need to contact Embryology in your patient portal. They will provide a consent form to be signed and returned to our office or uploaded back to the portal.

  • Testing

You will need to come into our office (or another office and fax results to us) for FDA testing. A simple blood draw will allow us to run a screen for the top 20 most highly genetic related diseases.

  • Finalizing the process

If everything checks out, the donor embryos can officially be transferred to our donor embryo program and donated to a hopeful family to be.

  • Rejoice!

You gave the gift of life. Good karma to you forever!

  • Finding a family

If you’re planning on doing an open donation, the first step to becoming an embryo donor is to find a family. If you don’t already have a family in mind, please send us a message on our Facebook page to be added to our Donor Embryo and Family Friend Finder Facebook group designed to help match donors with interested families.

  • Contact the Embryology Department in eIVF

When you inform the Embryology Department in your patient portal that you will be donating your embryos, they will provide you with a consent to donate form that must be signed and returned to our office or uploaded into the patient portal.

  • Testing

After submitting your consent form you will then need to come into our office for FDA testing. A simple blood draw will allow us to screen for the top 20 most highly genetic related diseases.

  • Finalizing the Donation

If everything checks out, the donor embryos can officially be transferred to the family you have identified as the recipients.

  • Forever

Forever hold that warm fuzzy feeling in your heart knowing you gave a truly priceless gift, the gift of life. Thank you.
