According to interesting data presented at the 2014 ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine) Meeting, choosing organic options for high pesticide fruits and vegetables improved sperm motility and morphology. In the study, men who ate the greatest amount of high pesticide fruits and vegetables showed a 70% lower motile sperm count and 64% lower number of normally shaped sperm. For those men who generally ate low pesticide fruits and vegetables, there were no detected changes in motility and morphology.
So, we know that it is important to eat a well balanced diet including plenty of fruits and vegetables, but which ones should be organic? The Environmental Working Group is a nonprofit research organization dedicated to providing the public with easily accessible information on the health and safety of products commonly used. Every year, they publish a list of the highest to lowest pesticide level fruits and vegetables. To go even further, they have a separate website devoted to the health and safety of home and beauty products. You are able to search their database for any of the products you use, and receive a score of the perceived safety of the product.
Moving back to choosing organic fruits and vegetables for high pesticide residue produce, here is the Environmental Working Group’s annual “Dirty Dozen” list of produce with highest levels of pesticides detected. The list begins with the highest level and works down:
7. Sweet Bell Peppers
8. Nectarines – Imported
10. Cherry Tomatoes
11. Snap Peas – Imported
The next time that you’re out shopping, we hope that you take this list along with you and consider swapping out a few of these items for their lower pesticide counterparts. If you have any questions about diet, nutrition, or improving sperm count and quality, please don’t hesitate to contact our nursing staff.
