Good morning! We hope that you had a great weekend. This week, we would like you to work on abandoning perfection. When we’re working on something so important, like trying to conceive, we often hold ourselves to perfection. Great effort and stress are dedicated to what we eat, how often we exercise, how we are coping with stress, and researching what else we can do to improve fertility. While it is important to be vigilant and aware of ways to improve infertility, it is also important to minimize our desires to be perfect.
Perfection holds us to an unattainable standard that often causes great stress and disappointment. For example, if we strive for ‘eating clean and following the diet 100%’ when we indulge in something, suddenly we can feel great guilt and possibly a sense that we should just give up since we can’t do it perfectly. This also goes for stress reduction, saving money for your cycle, exercise, and taking vitamins/supplements.
Instead of telling ourselves that it is all or nothing, or that we are going to completely change from this point forward, let’s change our words to truly love and support ourselves. Instead of ‘perfect’ we are going to take it one step at a time. One meal choice, 10 minutes of exercise, one deep breath at a time. Once you have made one ‘good’ choice, congratulate yourself! You have improved! If you grab something sweet for a snack instead if your usual clean eating, that is ok too. You do not have to give up your entire effort. You are human, and you can make a different decision next time. Abandoning perfection gives you great opportunity to grow, and removes a lot of the negative thought cycle.
