Good morning! We hope that you had a great weekend. This evening, Lisa Stack, our Support Coordinator, is hosting a free Fertility Support Teleworkshop on Communicating with Your Partner. The tools discussed in this workshop will not only help in your relationship with your partner, but also with your family, friends, and healthcare team.
Communication is how we convey our emotions, needs, and wants. When we are tired, frustrated, or feeling vulnerable, the once open and honest conversation can quickly breakdown. One challenging component of this break in communication is that the person on the other side may not even know that you are holding back, and they won’t know, unless you explicitly tell them. For example, you may be quietly waiting for your partner to ask you how you are doing, becoming increasingly disappointed in his apparent disinterest. However, in reality, he is unaware that you need this from him. You didn’t ask, or tell him, and isn’t fair to assume that he would just know what you need at all times. Similarly, if you are starting a new medication or cycle with our center, it is important for you to practice asking questions explicitly. Your nurse or healthcare provider may not know that you need further explanation, unless you convey to them that you have more questions.
At times, it may feel redundant to ask questions or let others know that you need. However, this is truly the best way to make sure that you’re getting your thoughts and feelings across. Following this method, will ensure that there are very few misunderstandings, and it also will remove many frustrations from your day. Most importantly, this communication will create a stronger and more focused support team for you to turn to.
