Video: Infertility Support & the Holidays-Be Kind to Yourself
Posted by: Editor on Nov 09, 2011 in News

Hi!  My name is Lisa Stack, and I’m the CNY Fertility Support Coordinator.  I wanted to upload a quick video in addition to my Words of Support and Encouragement article this week talking about the holidays.  Last week, I talked a little about an introduction of working through the holidays and any sort of challenging emotions that we’re experiencing.  This week, I talked a little bit about making sure you spend some time with yourself and that you’re good to yourself throughout the holidays.  Obviously, I focused on Halloween, but this really transcends to all holidays.  {{vspace8}}
You want to make sure that you’re being kind to yourself and your emotions.  Making sure that you know what you’re going to do on that day, how you’re going to celebrate and being sure that you’re OK with your plans.  Now, it’s OK to say no every once in a while; that’s protecting you and your emotions.  I don’t want you to cut yourself off completely from the outside and from your friends, but if something just feels too challenging just go ahead and say, “I’m sorry.  I can’t make it.  Maybe I’ll catch you next time.”  That’ll help you and preserve your emotions and the strength that you need to work through your cycles. {{vspace8}}
Another way of looking at it as Dr. Kiltz has always recommends is throwing yourself into the holidays.  Spending time around those that you love.  If you want to be pregnant, spend time around pregnant women and children.  I always want to use it as a good motivation.  So, if I see friends or maybe family members with children; and I see some traditions that they’re doing, I like to put it in the back of my mind and say, “That’s what I’m going to do with my child”.  So it’s a good idea for you to stockpile those memories, and start some new traditions that you look forward to sharing with your children. {{vspace8}}
Be kind to yourself, take these holidays slow, and if you need a time out, just take a few minutes by yourself and you can always leave the party if you have to.  Please let me know if there’s anything that I can touch on.  Next week, we will be talking more about the holidays and some good coping mechanisms to get ready for those larger events.  See you then! {{vspace8}}
