Video: Infertility, PCOS & Preparing for Holiday Eating
Posted by: Editor on Jul 27, 2011 in News

Hi!  My name is Lisa Stack, and I’m the CNY Fertility Support Coordinator.  In addition to my Words of Support and Encouragement article this week, I wanted to upload a quick video talking about preparing for eating out and enjoying the holiday meals.  Now, while you’re trying to conceive, we often talk about eating healthy and getting enough nutrients, and not eating too much in our indulgences that we love.  We often make sure that you have fun, and it can be challenging especially if you have PCOS and go to a barbeque and not have all of the hot dogs, hamburgers, cookies, and ice cream or whatever you may be looking at.  So, I have a couple of tips to help you and make sure that you’re still eating healthy like you have been and supporting your fertility while enjoying the summer and all the barbeques, and the fun meals that come with it. {{vspace8}}
Before you go, it sometimes helps to have a nice, big meal so that you’re not starving when you get there.  Usually, when you’re hungry and you haven’t planned ahead, that’s when you’re snacking and grabbing foods that you may not really want to eat, but they’re there and you’re hungry.  So, get something good before—a nice big salad of leafy greens, some protein, a couple apples or bananas, some good fruits and veggies in there will help fill you up.{{vspace8}}
When you’re there, try and drink water instead of soda, beer, wine, or mixed drinks.  Water will help keep you hydrated and keep you a little full, and cut down on the calories and the sugar that you’ll be getting from those other sweet drinks.{{vspace8}}
Also, what I really like to do, especially if you have some food intolerances or allergies, is bring a dish to pass.  If you’re doing just a regular-themed barbeque, or maybe there’s a Mexican theme; whatever the theme is call ahead and bring enough food to pass for everyone.  Just make a nice, large dish of some good protein and veggie that is tasty and that people will want to grab, so you’re eating amongst everyone else and you’re eating some good, festive foods.  Maybe something special that you’ve saved for these occasions so that you’re just limited to salads with just a little bit of oil and vinegar.{{vspace8}}
Keep in mind that you want to bring foods with you and enjoy, and have a lot of fun sharing with friends and family, because that’s really what it’s all about.  We can just do a little bit of prep to make sure that we stay on the course for the best and most fertile life!  Have a great week!{{vspace8}}
