Posted by: Editor on Mar 16, 2013 in News

CNY Fertility Center recognizes the month of March as National Endometriosis Awareness Month and would like to share some information and resources with you. We are also excited to be able to share that we have a last minute surprise guest speaker for our  Fertility Support Teleworkshop Monday, March 18th, 6:00-7:00pm: Heather Guidone, Surgical Program Director of the Center for Endometriosis Care and Vice President of the Endometriosis Research Center will be joining us on the call to talk a bit about EndometriosisCenterforendo.com / endocenter.org.

Most cases of female infertility are caused by challenges with ovulation but uterine and tubal factors, like Endometriosis, can also affect fertility about 25% of the time. Endometriosis is a painful illness affecting 1 out of every 10 women around the world and it’s much more than just the cause of “painful periods.”

Endometriosis is a disease characterized by the aberrant presence of endometrial-like glands and stroma located outside the womb – where it doesn’t belong.  These fragments are biochemically different, and behave differently, from normal endometrium which is shed during a period.  With endometriosis, the disease occurs on the surrounding structures, causing severe pain, bowel, bladder or other organ dysfunction, inflammation, scarring and adhesions, and in some cases, infertility.

There is no known prevention for endometriosis but there are ways to improve your quality of life in spite of having this disease.

ENDOMETRIOSIS SELF-TEST: Developed in 1999 by the Endometriosis Research Center.

If you think you may have endometriosis there is a self test that can be the impetus to you picking up the phone and making an appointment with your OB/GYN to find out for sure.  Pelvic surgery is the only current way to definitively diagnose the disease.
